Hugo pratt books6/10/2023 Not perfect by any means, but it entertains and makes us old people feel like we’re in our early teens and in love with Maguire again. The villains were great, with Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin being extremely scary and Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus also very solid.ĭefinitely one to rewatch. Seeing Spider-Man and Doctor Strange having a bit of conflict was also neat, especially with Spider-Man actually winning and trapping Strange in the mirror dimension. Holland’s Peter is used to working with others because of his involvement with the Avengers, something Maguire and Garfield’s versions did not get to do, so this gives him control of the story. The coolest thing I noticed was that even though Holland’s Parker is the youngest of the three, he’s still the one calling the shots. I loved seeing Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back on the big screen as Peters Parker/Spider-Men, with their own problems and regrets, teaching our current Peter Parker some valuable lessons about loss and responsibility. East of eden audio book6/10/2023 After using people all of her adolescent life, she burns her house down, with her parents inside (she hated them for their stupidness and thinking they knew her) and leaves for her own life. From here we learn of Cathy, who is a pretty evil little girl herself. They co-exist uneasily with eachother after their father dies and leaves them alot of money. They survived eachother in childhood and their oppossing views of their father. Their father was a very strict mana nd Charles was jealous of Adam and a pretty mean kid. Adam Trask is another central figure and he grew up with his younger brother Charles. Everyone liked Samuel and many people relied on him for many different things, fixing things, births, etc. They were poor in money but rich in eachother and love. The book starts out telling about the Salinas Valley in California and Samuel Hamilton, an Ireland immigrant, his wife and his many children. The book makes you question right/wrong and good/evil and wonder if the differences even exist. The story flows seamlessly from person to person and I found myself caring about even the "smaller" characters. This book had so many meaningful/profound areas that I would often stop to think about it. East of Eden is a pretty long book but well worth the time it takes to read it. Rogues keefe review6/9/2023 The appearance of his by-line in The New Yorker is always an event and collected here for the first-time readers can see his work forms an always enthralling but deeply human portrait of criminals and rascals, as well as those who stand up against them. Keefe brilliantly explores the intricacies of forging one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, vintage wines, examines whether a whistle-blower who dared to expose money laundering at a Swiss bank is a hero or a fabulist, spends time in Vietnam with Anthony Bourdain, chronicles the quest to bring down a cheerful international black market arms merchant and profiles a passionate death penalty attorney who represents the 'worst of the worst', among other bravura works of literary journalism. As Keefe says in his preface, 'They reflect on some of my abiding preoccupations: crime and corruption, secrets and lies, the permeable membrane separating licit and illicit worlds, the bonds of family, the power of denial'. Rogues brings together a dozen of his most celebrated articles from The New Yorker. Patrick Radden Keefe has garnered prizes ranging from the National Magazine Award to the Orwell Prize to the National Book Critics Circle Award for his meticulously-reported, hypnotically-engaging work on the many ways people behave badly. Terror on Tape by James O'Neill6/8/2023 Last year, O’Neill and other brass including Chief of Department Terence Monahan took the FEMA-funded plane to Pennsylvania for the wake of Dolores Boyce - the mother of then-Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce, The Post revealed Tuesday. “I went to the state trooper’s funeral to pay my respects,” he said. O’Neill last flew aboard the plane to attend the funeral of 29-year-old state trooper Nicholas Clark in western New York on July 8. Sometimes to get to different places, we need to do it quickly.” “The police commissioner has a very busy schedule, as you might appreciate. “Me on a counterterror mission? No, that’s not my job,” he said at an unrelated press conference. The top cop also said he was never once aboard the Cessna 208 Caravan for the counterterror business it is intended for. Police Commissioner James O’Neill on Wednesday admitted that he’s been shuttled around “three or four times” on the NYPD’s $4 million, federally funded spy plane and defended the use because he’s “busy.” Remarkably, he pulled off a daring escape-but then had to traverse hundreds of miles of enemy territory, alone, with nothing but a crumpled wad of cash, four slabs of chocolate, and his wits to guide him. But just two weeks after his arrival, the soldiers he was accompanying on an armored train were ambushed, and Churchill was taken prisoner. Despite deliberately putting himself in extreme danger as a British Army officer in colonial wars in India and Sudan, and as a journalist covering a Cuban uprising against the Spanish, glory and fame had eluded him.Ĭhurchill arrived in South Africa in 1899, valet and crates of vintage wine in tow, there to cover the brutal colonial war the British were fighting with Boer rebels. He believed that to achieve his goal he must do something spectacular on the battlefield. From New York Times bestselling author of Destiny of the Republic and The River of Doubt, a thrilling narrative of Winston Churchill's extraordinary and little-known exploits during the Boer WarĪt age twenty-four, Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. |
